Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy Explained By a Charleston Therapist

Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is a form of psychotherapy that incorporates both CBT and Mindfulness skills. Mindfulness skills help you look at your thoughts with curiosity and without judgement, while CBT helps you interrupt and challenge your unhelpful automatic thoughts. Mindfulness skills can be used in a variety of ways including body scans, meditations, and movement.

Mindfulness is tuning into the present moment without judgement. It is the observation of thoughts and emotions without labeling them good or bad - they simply are. Mindfulness allows us to practice acceptance of our thoughts and feelings. We simply notice them and observe how one thought leads to the next. It can help us shift gears from a critical and judgmental mind to a curious, observant and non-judgmental mind.

The practice of mindfulness can allow us to become more comfortable with the uncomfortable. We become the observing self and notice what’s happening within our minds and bodies to better understand how we operate, but also what we may need. When we can create a better relationship with our thoughts and emotions, we can create a better relationship with not only ourselves, but also those around us.
